Rocsole’s Pipe Deposition Scanning Technology Secures Shell Investment

3.1.2017

The City of Kuopio is pleased to announce the investment by Shell Technology Ventures (STV) in Rocsole. This is STV’s first investment in Finland.

Rocsole is a Kuopio, Finland-based company with sales and services office in Houston, Texas. The company is known for being a leading provider in tomography technology for industrial processes and especially for the oil and gas industries. Founded in 2012, Rocsole is setting the standards in preventive maintenance operations in deposition and scale problems. Rocsole’s customers include some of the largest oil and gas refining industry companies in the world.

“Rocsole’s smart pig sensor could change the way we inspect subsea pipelines by allowing us to quickly obtain flow and deposition insights using their non-invasive and accurate analytics’’, says STV Managing Director, Geert van de Wouw.  “Their tomographic imaging techniques mean that measurements can be conducted from inside the actual pipe without damaging or disturbing it.  Technology that can reduce down time and optimize production is critical for Shell Operations, both for on- and offshore.”

“We are excited to work with a strategic investor who understands the business value and competitive advantage of a tomographic approach in industrial imaging. STV recognizes the need of preventive maintenance enabled by accurate pipe deposition monitoring and identification that Rocsole offers through its solutions based on patented electrical tomography platform’’, says Anssi Lehikoinen, Rocsole Chairman.

Kuopio, located in Eastern Finland, is a highly-integrated ecosystem with internationally recognized centers of excellence at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) in molecular medicine, diabetes and heart disease, aerosol physics and inverse problems. Rocsole emerged from the Inverse Problems – Research Group.

The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is a world leader in neurology research, commercial gene therapy production, and forest and food technologies. The unique intersection of multidisciplinary fields – the natural environment, forest-based industrial know-how, computational engineering, intelligence machines, smart devices and machine learning, along with human sciences – positions Kuopio as a global innovative problem-solving resource and strategic partner.

According to Jukka Pitkänen, Managing Director of Kuopio Innovations, “we have seen a steady stream of global companies such as Honeywell, GE Healthcare, Charles River and Power Flute come to Kuopio, first to explore and then to invest and grow by taking advantage of our cost-effective, highly educated and efficient workforce. Now we are pleased to welcome Shell Technology Corporate Ventures into our community.”
