DETAILS
Savilahti is one of the most versatile urban development projects in Finland. In the 2020s the number of students in Savilahti will reach 16 000–17 000. The area will provide jobs for 15 000–17 000 experts and homes for 7 000–8 000 residents. The total investments are estimated at about 2 billion euros, which will pay off as 700 000 square metres of floor area, new business opportunities, services, wellbeing and improved quality of life. The construction of the area is already underway and since 2015 around 600 million euros have been invested in the construction projects. We have already welcomed thousands of new students and experts to Savilahti and ecosystem activities have developed through cooperation.
The growing Savilahti ecosystem consists of Kuopio University Hospital, University of Eastern Finland, Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Savo Vocational College, several research institutes, KPY Novapolis business park and over 200 companies. This ecosystem provides a platform for growth, development, experimentation and innovations.
Developing a new city district offers a lot of opportunities to use smart city and data-driven solutions in order to promote sustainable development and to make everyday life a bit easier, which will make the new area more attractive. Future Savilahti will be full of interesting details. The next step is the construction of homes for approximately 2 000 residents and versatile business premises in the former Finnish Defence Forces depot area. One special feature in Savilahti are the old Defence Forces storage caves, which will be partly re-purposed as sports and events center. We are also looking for interested developers for the other caves (~2500 square metres). The remaining caves could be used for example as datacenters, indoor farms and for different energy solutions.
Do you have ideas that would make Savilahti even better? You are welcome to join the Savilahti team!
