Cultural history in the most beautiful part of the lake district
Canal and the history of the local factories have made the city an interesting travel destination.
“Old Varkaus – New Direction” is a project for developing the area of Old Varkaus as a business environment, a travel destination and a living and working environment. The area contains three cultural environments of national significance: the centre of Päivönsaari, the factory area and the residential area of Kommila and Kosulanniemi. The idea is to build a new, globally attractive travel destination based on the industrial cultural heritage of the area. The focus is on developing the business environment for entrepreneurs in the area and on improving the potential uses of spaces and buildings of cultural and historical value. Business collaboration, networking and pooling resources across industry boundaries are some of the cornerstones of the project.
